Tahiti Treat
Mission Viejo, January 2008 -
For romance, there are few better places than the French Polynesian
island of Tahiti. It has crystal clear cobalt waters, secluded coves,
majestic mountains, French influences, year-round tropical temperatures
and nearly every other ingredient that backs-up the island’s nickname
“The Island of Love.”
Situated in the middle of the Pacific, just south of the equator, Tahiti
receives far fewer visitors than other romantic island hot spots; most
notably Hawaii (which receives more visitors in one day than Tahiti
receives in one year) making the island paradise a haven for those
seeking privacy amid a stunning, heart-pounding backdrop.
Cruise ships dock in the capital city of Papeete,
along the beautiful tree-lined waterfront promenade. A popular first
stop is the Papeete Market (Le Marché) which serves as a great
introduction of the island’s rich offerings of aromatic flowers, coconut
soaps, fresh produce, Tahitian-made crafts and the island’s famous black
pearls.
The city entwines its French culture with sidewalk
cafes, boutique shops, and a selection of excellent French restaurants,
in addition to an assortment of international flavors including Chinese,
Italian, and Vietnamese. For a quick evening snack, food trucks (Roulottes)
serve Polynesian and French specialties along the waterfront.
But you haven’t truly visited Tahiti without
setting off to discover the unspoiled tracts of mountains, waterfalls,
rainforests, beaches, and exotic flowers that stretch for miles on
Tahiti-Nui (Big Tahiti) to the tear-dropped shaped peninsula, Tahiti-Iti
(Little Tahiti). Island drives and 4x4 safaris are two of the most
popular excursions that transport visitors through the gorgeous
landscape, stopping off at stunning overlooks. Drives include cultural
museums such as the Museum of Tahiti & Her Islands and the Paul Gauguin
Museum, while the 4x4 adventures delve deep into the lush surroundings.
Falling in love with Tahiti is easy to do; and to
extend your stay, cruise lines offer pre- or post-cruise accommodations.
Most romantic are the private bungalows propped over turquoise lagoon
waters, many of which offer glass-paneled tables to watch the aquatic
life below.
Tahiti is on all South Pacific itineraries which also make visits to the
surrounding islands, including nearby Moorea and Bora Bora, and is
served by Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Cunard, and Regent
Seven Seas. A Cruise Holidays travel expert can help you choose the
right cruise line and itinerary that meets your mood for romance.
