The New Frontier: River Cruising in China
Mission Viejo, January 2008 - A country of
amazing contrast, China is eclectic mix of lively cities, bucolic
villages and sublime landscapes that is best discovered on the mighty
Yangtze River, the world’s third longest river winding 3,900 miles
through the heart of some of China’s most spectacular scenery.
River cruises cut the mileage down by covering the popular, easternmost
parts of the river. Itineraries focus on a combination of city stays
and a Yangtze River cruise with air transportation to, or from, the two
most prominent anchor cities – either Shanghai or Beijing. Itineraries
also include hotels, all transportation, most meals, sightseeing and a
host of features.
Regardless of where you start, all itineraries are
designed to unfold a new and provocative perspective of China. In
Shanghai, embark on a tour to visit the Shanghai museum and Old
Shanghai; in the evening enjoy an acrobatic performance. In Beijing,
walk along The Great Wall, enter the majestic Forbidden City, and take
in the wide expanse of Tiananmen Square. See the Terra Cotta Warriors –
all 6,000 of them – in Xi’an. For a more extensive tour of Chinese
regions, many itineraries include air travel and sightseeing to
Mongolia, Tibet and Siberia as well.
Once on the Yangtze River, the life of the big city disappears
quickly as the authentic China comes into view. Slices of the common
life in small villages, beautiful countryside and wildlife sprinkle the
meandering river’s high mountainous banks, often mysteriously coming
into focus through a light mist. Along the river, visits to historical
cities such as Shibaozhai, Wanxian or Fengdu (city visits vary based on
itinerary and/or river conditions) give travelers an opportunity to
embrace rural customs and folklore.
The highlight of the journey is the passage through the Three Gorges,
including the impressive Lesser Three Gorges, an area of towering
cliffs, deep valleys, terraced farms, and forest covered mountains, and
passage through the new, gigantic, Three Gorges Dam.
With China’s surge into the international ring and its preparation for
the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the country’s doors are
wide open to the world and the time to experience China is now. To
