Sneak Peek at 2008’s New Ships
Mission Viejo, January 2008 - It’s time to
take a look ahead to the new cruise ships coming out in 2008, and this
year there are plenty. Actually, too many to fit in this article. Once
again, it seems that bigger is better. Inventive and imaginative new
attractions accent the already long list of attractions and
guarantee that cruisers can expect to be delighted and amazed while on
board. Here are a few highlights for ’08.
The cruise line known to “Get Out There” can
strengthen their claim with the size of their ships. Royal Caribbean
International’s Freedom-class, first introduced by Freedom of the Seas
then Liberty of the Seas, is the largest class of ships afloat. Come
May, Independence of the Seas will be added to the Freedom cache,
featuring many of the amenities found on its sister ships, including
Flow Rider, H20 Zone water park, ice skating rink, boxing ring and
cantilevered whirlpools. The 3,364 passenger liner will be the largest
ship ever to home-port in Europe (Southampton, England). Watch for an
even larger class of ship coming out next year from RCI.
Holland America Line will roll out Eurodam this
year, the first ship in their new Signature-class of ships – their
largest class ever. Along with many Holland trademarks, including the
Culinary Art Center and Pinnacle Grill, the 2,044 passenger vessel will
feature a new Pan-Asian restaurant, Tamarind, an intimate Italian
restaurant, Canelleto’s, and two funky gathering spots; Silk Den Bar and
an African-themed Explorer’s Lounge. Ten staterooms offer a panoramic
view with floor-to-ceiling surround windows, a cruise first. Eurodam
will first cruise in Europe starting in July, and as the seasons change,
along North America’s northeast coast and the Caribbean.
Just when you thought cruise lines ran out of
highly imaginative ideas, another one pops up. This time it is onboard
glassblowing demonstrations found only onboard Celebrity Solstice when
it debuts in December in the Caribbean. For spa enthusiasts, the ship
introduces a new concept in verandah accommodations with Aquaclass,
featuring a relaxation room, garden, aromatherapy and steam room, and
exclusive dining in the ship’s specialty restaurant, Blu, for passengers
in one of the 130 Aquaclass staterooms. For relaxing, Solstice unveils
five new lounges: Cellar Masters, Ensemble Lounge, Passport Bar, Quasar,
and the Sky Observation Lounge. Celebrity Solstice will be the line's
first in a class of four 2,850-guest vessels.
