Private Islands
Mission Viejo, January 2008 -
On a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise, ships island-hop from one sun-drenched
port to the next in an intensive and active destination-packed journey.
To break-up the pace, most cruise lines have invested time and money
into developing their own little private islands offering an oasis for
their passengers to literally get away from it all.
Owned by the cruise line, private islands offer
cruise passengers a textbook tropical island experience that no other
stop on the itinerary could provide: sun, plenty of sand, activities or
relaxing options all within the confines of a private island – that
means it’s just you, your shipmates, and a whole island on which to
play.
Most visits are all-day affairs where you can do as
much or as little as you’d like. You’ll have the staples that you’d
expect on a tropical island, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking,
sailing, and beach games. There are also plenty of excursions if you’re
a bit more adventurous, like deep sea fishing and horseback riding. Some
of these options do require a fee, so make sure to ask your travel
expert for details. Or you can just set off on your own little adventure
and take in the island on a hike either down the beach or follow a laid
out nature trail.
The surroundings invite relaxation, and cruise
lines pack the islands with soothing elements: you can kick back in one
of many hammocks, rent a private beachside cabanas (some with butler
service), or relieve the stress with an open air massage. Many islands
also offer adults-only areas to detach from the crowds and spend the day
in relaxing confines of beaches, cabanas and scenery.
Kids will find age-appropriate programs that will
keep them occupied throughout the day. Island scavenger hunts, games,
sports, whale digs, water sports, children’s playground and swimming
areas and aqua parks are some of the many activities supplied by cruise
lines. Most of these activities are supervised by cruise line personnel,
giving adults time to indulge in their own interests during their visit.
Between relaxing and playing, there’s usually an
outdoor barbeque lunch where passengers can bite on a burger while
sitting on the beach or sip a fruity drink in a hammock. Lunches are
usually accompanied with live music.
