Venice
Mission Viejo, February 2008 - A city of
remarkable resilience, Venice has a unique aura. Built on wooden pylons
centuries ago, this maze of a city plays on your curiosity and pulls on
your heartstrings with every turn.
The quintessential
Venetian experience is floating down the city’s tight canals, whether
aboard a romantic gondola or a public water bus (vaporreto).
You’ll glide under quaint bridges while surrounded by elegant buildings
that have withstood the watery test of time for centuries. The scenery
alone, along the famed Grand Canal, will tempt you to start making plans
for a return trip.
Aside from the canals, Venice is also a labyrinth of small streets and
getting lost is part of the experience. While navigating the winding
streets, you may stumble upon locals sipping wine at a sidewalk café,
see gondoliers shining up their sleek vessels, or slip into a restaurant
for some of their seafood specialties. Since the entire city is
pedestrian friendly, your stroll with be uninhibited by wheeled
conveyances.
Nearly all visitors flock
to the St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco) in the heart of the
city. Within the expansive piazza is St. Mark’s Basilica; the five
domed structure is Venice’s opulent status symbol of
wealth and power from the 11th century. Next door, the
Doge’s Palace was the seat of the government of Venice for centuries;
head inside to see the Golden Staircase and the Great Council Chamber
among other ornate rooms. The Campanile di San Marco,
or St. Mark’s bell tower, (the tower you see in all classic Venice
photos), is actually an exact replica of the original structure that
stood since the 16th century. The original structure
collapsed in 1902 and the replica dates to 1912.
After you have toured the main attractions, shop one of the many
boutiques that surround the piazza or stop for a perk-up at an outdoor
café. Art admirers should head to the Gallerie dell'Accademia for
Renaissance paintings or to the Guggenheim Collection for more modern
pieces. Venice is well-known for its elaborate Venetian masks and
stunning glasswork – either might make a nice memento or your visit.
